THE STORY SCRIPTURE Personal and Family Devotional Guide Week #5 – Abraham (Part 2)
Day 1: Read Gen. 18. When the Lord told Sarah she would have a child at the age of 90, she laughed. God’s response to her was “Is anything to hard for me?” How are you struggling with doubt and unbelief? Get these areas firmly fixed in your mind and then visualize a conversation with God that begins by him saying, “Is this too hard for me?”
Day 2: Read Gen. 19. Because of his love for Lot and his family, Abraham begged God to spare Sodom and Gomorrah. Do you plead with God for your family and friends who are caught up in sin? How far are you willing to go in bargaining with God for their deliverance? Spend some time interceding for people who need to be rescued.
Day 3: Read Gen. 20. When told of the impending destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah, Lot “hesitated.” When leaving the city, Lot’s wife “looked back” and was punished. God invites us to leave our sin behind and experience deliverance, but at times we hesitate and look back too. Is there anything in your life that God is calling you to leave behind? If you’re hesitating to let it go or you’ve let it go but you’re looking back, why are you doing this?
Day 4: Read Gen. 21. Abraham was a great man of faith, but he still struggled with trusting God, self-reliance, and rationalizing/justifying his sin (i.e. – incident with Abimelech). Is there any situation in your life where you are struggling to trust that God will provide and/or protect you? What causes you to “take matters into your own hands” and justify/rationalize your sin?
Day 5: Read Gen. 22. The birth of Isaac was a powerful display of God’s faithfulness. How has God been faithful to you lately (be specific) and what promises has he kept?
Day 6: Read Gen. 23. God put Abraham to the test with Isaac. The test was this, “Is there anything you will withhold from me or do you fear me enough to give me control of everything?” Abraham passed the test, will you? Is there anything in your life that you have not given God complete control of? If so, why are yo |
