THE STORY OF SCRIPTURE

Personal and Family Devotional Guide

Week #4 – Abraham (Part 1)

Day 1:

1. Read Gen. 12.

2. God called Abraham to leave what was comfortable and familiar in order to follow him into the unknown.  God calls us to do the same!  How is God asking you to do this in your life?  Have you “left” and “followed” in faith, or have fear and doubt kept you in your “comfort zone?”  If you’re stuck in the comfortable and familiar, what specifically are your fears and doubts?

Day 2:

1. Read Gen. 13.

2. Abraham’s humility and loyalty caused him to do right by Lot.  Humility will lead us to exalt others above ourselves and loyalty will lead us to stand by people when it is costly to do so.  Are you exalting your family, friends, and brothers/sisters in Christ above yourself?  Are you loyal – standing by people even when it requires sacrifice and risk?

Day 3:

1. Read Gen. 14.

2. Lot experienced a “slow fade” into sin.  First, he pitched his tents near Sodom. Then, he ended up living in Sodom.  Finally, he found himself sitting at the city gate (i.e. – leader in Sodom).  Listen to the Casting Crowns song “Slow Fade” and ask God to reveal to you areas where you are experiencing a “slow fade” into sin.

Day 4:

1. Read Gen. 15.

2. Abraham was a man of great faith and God credited righteousness to him because of this trust (Gen. 15:6).  However, Abraham was not perfect in his faith.  He struggled with fear, doubt, self-reliance, and impatience just like the rest of us.  Which stronghold do you struggle with the most – fear, doubt, self-reliance, or impatience and how does this stronghold impact your life on a daily basis?

Day 5:

1. Read Gen. 16.

2. Abraham was a man of worship.  All throughout his journey to Caanan, he stopped often to “call on the name of the Lord” (i.e. – praise God for who he was and what he had done as well as ask for his protection and providence in the future).  How often do you stop during your day to call on the name of the Lord?  Seek to worship God “along the way” today.

Day 6:

1. Read Gen. 17.

2. Abraham was a man of rapid, immediate obedience.  When God told him to circumcise every male under his care, Abraham did so “on that very day.”  When you know God is asking you to do something, do you delay or obey immediately?  If you delay, what produces this response in you?
